Access Eye Centre offers a more accessible pathway to cataract, glaucoma and retinal injection care in Sydney. Patients begin with a comprehensive assessment by our optometrist, including examination, scans, and all required testing, with ophthalmologist review built into the pathway when needed.

Eligible pensioners and Health Care Card holders can access bulk billed glaucoma and cataract consultations, testing and laser treatment. All patients received bulk billed Glaucoma Laser Treatment.

Cataract surgery is not bulk billed, but we offer a lower-cost cataract surgery pathway with clear pricing from the start.

Intravitreal injections are bulk billed for all patients, including the consultation.

We believe patients should understand costs before treatment. Our pricing is clear, with bulk billed care for eligible concession card holders and transparent fees for cataract and glaucoma care. All patients receive bulk billed intravitreal injections.

How the Pathway Works

Optometrist Assessment

Your first appointment is with our experienced optometrist. This includes your history, examination, scans, and all required testing to assess for cataract, glaucoma or retinal conditions requiring intravitreal injections.

Ophthalmologist Review

Your results are then reviewed by the ophthalmologist remotely. This means specialist input is built into the pathway without requiring every patient to attend an ophthalmologist consultation at the first visit. These reviews are bulk billed for all medicare eligible patients.

Treatment including Surgery, Laser & Injections

If you need laser treatment, surgery or intravitreal injections, you will see the ophthalmologist who will recommend the appropiate treatment. Lasers and intravitreal injections are bulk billed for all medicare eligible patients.

Monitoring

Patient with stable conditions that don't require active treatment will be monitored by the optometrist with ophthalmology oversight. This creates a more efficient and affordable pathway while still maintaining specialist oversight.

Dr Jason Cheng

Ophthalmologist

Dr Jason Cheng is a Sydney-based ophthalmologist with over 10 years of experience in cataract and glaucoma care. He has public appointments as a consultant at Sydney Eye Hospital and St George Hospital, where he also teaches ophthalmic surgery through his public hospital appointments. He serves on the Collaborative Care Glaucoma Working Group for RANZCO and has been invited to speak nationally and internationally on cataract and glaucoma surgery.

At Access Eye Centre, Dr Cheng provides ophthalmologist review, specialist consultation, laser treatment, and cataract surgery. His focus is on delivering experienced, specialist-led care in a setting that is more accessible and easier for patients to navigate.

Michael Yapp

Optometrist

Michael is an accomplished optometrist with extensive clinical experience in the diagnostic assessment and long-term monitoring of glaucoma and other ocular diseases. During his tenure as Head of Clinical Operations at the Centre for Eye Health (CFEH), where he served since its inception in 2009, he played a central role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care. His career includes a broad range of experience across private practices, international locum roles in Australia and the UK, and dedicated service within ophthalmology clinics, providing him with a comprehensive clinical perspective.

His expertise is further backed by his contribution to the profession as an Optometry Advancement Advisor for Optometry Australia, where he helped shape clinical practice standards. Michael's background demonstrates a high level of clinical proficiency, allowing him to manage complex patient pathways and monitor eye health with exceptional precision. At Access Eye Centre, he works seamlessly alongside the ophthalmology team to provide expert, reliable screening and disease monitoring, ensuring patients receive timely and thorough clinical assessments.
